Bariatric Plastic Surgery explained:

Bariatric means Obesity. Bariatric Surgery is Gastric or intestinal surgery designed for weight reduction.

Bariatric Plastic Surgery is Plastic Surgery designed for excision of redundant skin and tissue due to significant weight reduction. The excision of redundant skin and tissue may be functional or cosmetic. 

Functional Excision is removal of skin and tissue causing secondary medical problems such as pannis excoriations.

Cosmetic Excision is removal of skin and tissue causing aesthetic dysmorphia such as excessive fat deposits or flabby arms / double chins.

Bariatric Plastic Surgery Expertise:

Bariatric Plastic Surgery is not simple cosmetic surgery. The bariatric patient requires careful and methodical pre-op, operative and post-op care not routinely encountered or provided in similar cosmetic procedures.



Remember a Bariatric patient is Obesity and most likely has Metabolic Syndrome.  Metabolic Syndrome is a combination of  High Blood Pressure, High cholesterol, Diabetes, Inflammation, Renal problems. While Significant weight reduction may improve Metabolic Syndrome the risk profile remains unchanged. 

Intra-Operative Surgery Risks include Fluid shifts, fluid overload, Congestive Heart Failure, Renal failure, hyperglycemia, blood loss, Pulmonary Embolism, and death.

Post-Op Surgery Risks include Fluid shifts, hyperglycemia, PE, a

nd poor wound healing.

Risk mitigation consists of Acute situational awareness and Surgical Planning with a Critical Care Anesthesiologist, and Post -op Planning with the office based team which may include an IV nurse and lymphatic massage specialist.
