Hair Loss PRP Treatment

PRP and Alopecia / Hair Loss Treatment

PRP GFs are used by Dr. Steven Dominguez in the treatment of male and female hair loss.

Hair loss can be very slow and predictable due to genetics (androgenic alopecia); occur over a couple of months due to autoimmune diseases, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and skin conditions such as psoriasis and seborrheic dermatitis; or rapid due to extreme stress such as physical trauma like surgery or intense illness, dramatic weight loss over a short period of time, and taking too much Vitamin A.

Women in particular may suffer from self-inflicted hair loss from hairstyles like cornrows or too-tight braids (traction alopecia).  Unfortunately some of the things women do to manipulate their hair -- dyes, chemical treatments, bad brushes, blow dryers, and flat irons -- can result in damage, breakage, and hair loss.

PRP injections may be used in conjunction with:

  • Minoxidil: This medicine is applied to the scalp. It can stop hairs from getting thinner and stimulate hair growth on the top of the scalp. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved minoxidil to treat hair loss. It is the only hair re-growth product approved for men and women.
  • Finasteride: The FDA approved this medicine to treat men with hair loss. It comes in pill form and helps slow hair loss in most (about 88%) men. It helps stimulate hair re-growth in many (about 66%) men. Finasteride works by stopping the body from making a male hormone, dihydrotestosterone (DHT).
  • Hair transplantation: Follicular Unit Extraction removes healthy hair and transplants them to areas of the scalp that need hair.

Cervelli[i] reported that PRP GFs induced activation of antiapoptotic regulators, such as the Bcl-2 protein and Akt signalling, prolongs the survival of dermal papilla cells during the hair cycle. In addition, the upregulation of FGF-7/b-catenin signalling pathways with PRP treatment is suggested to stimulate hair growth by inducing follicular stem cell differentiation as well as prolonging the anagen phase of the hair growth cycle.

Kang[ii] et al. reported the clinical efficacy of injection of CD34+ cell-containing PRP preparation for pattern hair loss. In this study, at three months after the first treatment, the patients presented clinical improvement in themean number of hairs, 20.5 ± 17.0%, mean hair thickness, 31.3 ± 30.1%, and mean two-point score, 84.4 ± 51.7%, compared with baseline values. At 6 months, the patients presented clinical improvement in mean hair count, 29.2 ± 17.8%, mean hair thickness, 46.4 ± 37.5%, and mean two-point score, 121.3 ± 66.8%, compared with baseline.

* We will not perform blood stamping procedures.  Although stamping has shown improvement in hair regeneration, the process is painful and requires mulitple stampings to elicit a hair follicle stimulation response.  The stamp reaches .8mm of depth which within the epidermis.  The hair follice lies in the DERMIS, well below the epidermis and very close to the subcutaneous fat.  Direct injection of PRP Growth Factors into the dermis is state of the art since the results are seen in 30 days, are reproducible and sustainable.
